Sometimes we need a reset. We’re tired, frustrated, and angry. Nothing is seems to be going right. Discouragement sets in and we get in a cycle of dispair, worry, and drowning sadness.
1. Stop what you are doing. When we’re going through difficult situations, one of the things we don’t do is stop. We continue along the same path until something negative happens to us. We need to stop making bad decisions, stop working, and stop thinking. We need to take time to quiet our minds, hearts, and lives to hear the Lord clearly. Maybe we need to go on long walk or drive, sit quietly, or take a longer lunch break. Maybe we just need to be alone.
2. Meet the Lord in prayer. When we are stressed by life and people, prayer is one of the things we sometimes forget about. Our help, encouragement, and restoration comes from the Lord. He can do more for us in ten seconds than almost anyone can do in a lifetime.
Psalm 55:22 – Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
3. Read (and heed) the scriptures. As the Lord meets us in prayer, our process of restoration continues with reading the Bible. Most of our deepest needs are found in the Bible, it is the guide for our feet and light for our path (Psalm 119:105). However, remember that reading is half the ‘battle,’ you must also do what you read and hear in prayer (James 1:22-25).
Psalm 119:9 – Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
4. Have an attitude of thanks and giving. Having an attitude of thankfulness allows us to have a change in perspective (toward godliness) and takes our focus off our issues. Giving accomplishes the same purpose PLUS we have a chance to see how our giving blesses another person, which improves our own countenance.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 – In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
