Luke 7:11-17 – And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
From Luke 7:11-17, there are three specific applications for our lives today:
1. Opportunities for ministry happen every day. Opportunities to be a blessing and service others will often come outside of the church building. Every day, we have opportunities to minister to others while driving to work, shopping at the supermarket, and going to the moves.
2. We must have compassion for others. We must live out the greatest commandments (Matthew 22:36-40). Regardless of race, social status, or beliefs, may love for all men identify we are His disciples (John 13:35). The lowliest of people need help…as well as the wealthiest. Each need Jesus, but the question is whether we will care enough for their personal plights to act.
3. Our compassion should move us to act. When we see injustice, tragedy, poverty, acts of prejudice, etc. may we be moved with compassion to act. May we ask if someone would like us to pray for them or pay for someone groceries or meal, provide clothing for those in need, and live out Matthew 25:31-40.
Compassion is a motivator to action. Think about the person you love the most. There is no other motivation you need to buy them flowers because it is Tuesday or give the very shirt off your back because you love them. But what about someone who is not of the same race or denomination? What about those who are of a lower socioeconomic class? Many of these are the ‘least’ that Jesus speaks of in Matthew 25…these are the ones who need our help the most.
Jesus’ compassion moved Him to act. It was almost like a natural ‘reflex.’ May we have the same compassion for all men, and not only those of our family or who look, act, and believe as we do.
