Most people understand compromise to be a settlement of differences by mutual concessions; an agreement reached by adjustment of conflicting or opposing claims, principles.  Compromise is also known as an endangering, especially of reputation; exposure to danger, suspicion (Dictionary.com).

Each day we face numerous decisions that can affect our lives before the Lord.  One choice decision can change the course of our lives on earth and beyond.  There comes sometimes when you would want to please your spouse (1 Corinthians 7:32-33), children, family, friends, or associates when you know God’s will is entirely different.  There is a compromise that occurs, but it is at your (and other’s) expense.

Compromises of this nature exposes you to temptation and sin as you choose not to live by the standards of God’s law.  An intentional attempt (or act) is made not to obey God at the expense of pleasing another person or party.  As the definition describes, there is a settlement of differences, but the difference is whether or not you will live by God’s Word.  You ‘settle’ to please others rather than God.

Compromise often starts small, affecting only you.  Then, as you allow that single compromise to exist, it ‘weakens’ you to other areas of compromise.  And it only grows into larger decisions that will ultimately affect others as well.

It only takes one decision of compromise to welcome destruction, ruin, and sin.

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Compromise causes you to:

  • Be disobedient.
  • Lose your integrity.
  • Possibly lead others into sin.
  • Be influenced by the devil (and the world).

If you find yourself in a position of compromise:

1.  Take responsibility for your actions.

2.  Repent to God and those that may be affected. The two items above may feel like the hardest to accomplish because you feel bad (and even depressed) that you failed yourself, others, and God.  It can be hard to even face them, and you would rather not say anything about it – in hopes that you can maintain your self-image in their sight.  However, it is equally important that you humble yourself to stop the cycle of compromise (Proverbs 16:18).  If you do not humble yourself, you may resort to lying and other means of compromise just to protect your self-image.

3.  Walk in truth. There is great freedom in walking in the light.  There is no need to hide anything (John 3:19-21); you will be made free (John 8:30-32); and restoration from God comes in an instant (1 John 1:9).

Maintain your integrity and obedience before the Lord.  Compromise is a slippery slope to all manner of evil.  Repent and return unto the Lord.
