Proverbs 19:11The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Some situations have the potential of making you very upset. In those moments, you often have a a few moments to consider whether you’ll defer your anger or not. So before you choose to allow your anger to take over, please consider the follow four thoughts:

1. A person of good discretion (understanding, prudence, insight) will defer their anger. When you feel wronged, anger is one of the emotions that fuel your intentions. You’re upset that we’ve been confronted, embarrassed, treated wrongly, etc. You want to show people you’re not a pushover and you were the wrong person to mess with…

Walk it O-F-F

Psalm 37:8 – Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

There comes a time when you’re so mad that the the scripture above doesn’t come to mind. In fact, the only thing that comes to mind when you’re mad is revenge; giving into temptation/sin; and going O-F-F on someone! Peace, love, calmness are no where near your mind.

Anger is a dangerous emotion. Anger desires a response. It doesn’t consider the consequences. It only considers itself – at all costs. It’s a highway to other emotions and actions:

All the (Road) Rage

Most of us have be the victim of some form of aggressive or bad driving. Some people seem to have trouble getting from Point A to B without driving right. They cut you off, won’t allow you to merge, drive too close to your bumper, and act as if they’re the only ones on the road.

What do you do?

The Grumpies

Have you ever had a day where hardly anything was going right? Did you find yourself complaining and becoming angry, short-tempered, and even using foul language?

If so, you may have come down with a case of the Grumpies (also known as living in the flesh).

The Grumpies often begin with an event, large or small, that irritates you. It can be the kids, drivers on the road, a co-worker…anything. The Grumpies then spread as multiple events stack on top of one another – often within a short period. By this time (if not already), you’ll discover those symptoms above.

Proverbs 17:22A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

One of the cures for the Grumpies is a merry heart. Many times all we need is one shot of SOMETHING (funny, heart-warming, or prayer, etc.) to break our concentration from our fleshly rage. When the Grumpies are coming on, don’t be left to conduct damage control after you’ve allow the grumpy flesh to have its way.

The Grumpies are curable! All things are possible through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).

Passover Point

Proverbs 19:11The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and [it is] his glory to pass over a transgression.

1. People can do things that really make you mad! Whether it’s something on a personal or public level, their actions can really upset you. The translated definition for transgression is an (violated) action against individuals, nation against nation, or God.1 These violations can be based on your personal preferences, laws, or standards.

To use discretion is to decide or act according to one’s own judgment; freedom of judgment or choice.2 When anger (over any issue) wants to consume you, you have a choice. You can choose to be angry or choose to let it go. You don’t have to be angry!

Each day, you’ll encounter many different situations, problems, and people. Each one might require different actions, but it’s important to maintain a steady countenance. If you allow your circumstances to dictate your emotional state, you’ll ride a roller coaster of emotions that will keep you unpredictable, unapproachable, and eventually out of God’s will. Don’t allow circumstances to leave you an emotional wreck. It’ll only hurt you and those around you.

Ecclesiastes 7:9Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

Proverbs 16:32He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Ephesians 4:31-32Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Proverbs 19:11The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Fully Justified

1. There are times when people lie on you, talk bad about you, mistreat you, and use you to their advantage. It’s times like these when you want to fight back, speak your mind (or at least give them a piece of it), defend yourself, and avenge the wrong done to you. Even though many know that vengeance is the Lord’s and He’ll repay (Deuteronomy 32:35; Romans 12:19), the feeling of self-vindication doesn’t seem to go away.

2. There are times when you want to see the other person or group pay for what they did! You want them to know that you were the WRONG PERSON to mess with and to think twice before doing it again! You want to see them squirm and beg for your mercy and forgiveness (Proverbs 24:17-18).
