When being told certain genres of Christian music are not appropriate for our lives before God, many questions arise:

  • What am I suppose to listen to?
  • What about the youth? What do you give them?
  • How do I distinguish between songs and artists?

To answer these questions, let’s review our greatest commandment:

Matthew 22:36-38 – Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.

Our greatest duty within this life is to love the Lord with every part of our heart, every part of our soul, and every part of our mind. Before we accomplish any other work or service before the Lord (in church), our chief aim should be to love Him. Concerning the realm of music, it is important that we are continually filling ourselves with songs that keep us in an intimate and consuming relationship with the Lord throughout each moment of the day.

Music has a powerful influence upon people. The beat of a song can usher us into joy, deep reflection, inappropriate behavior, and others make us feel invincible. The beat has a powerful draw upon us, often something we can’t explain, but we feel it running through our soul. Now, secular music (secular means separate from religion) we can imagine all the influences of sin, flesh, and the devil, but can such music infiltrate Christian borders? It sure can…and has.

The Stars are Falling

Within some Christian music industry, some have incorporated a rating system on new music. For the Christian music industry and artists, the goal should be to glorify God through music; bring people closer to Him (through praise and worship); and instruct others toward godliness through music. With CD reviews, these reviews give the impression that Christian music is about good and bad production. Though there are Christian artists that might not provide as ‘polished’ as others (due to money or resources), each of them have the same goal…or at least they should.

As Christians, we must be careful not to allow our decisions or comparisons that equal that of the world. We must keep our focus on the context of glorifying Christ and not comparing products. We should celebrate the works of each person that seeks to proclaim God’s message to the world – whether it is a polished product or not.

God has given each of us a message to share and a light to shine. May we do so with the strength, grace, and anointing given to us through Christ. May we see the unity of the underlying message of Jesus Christ and not the differences among us.

Celebrate Christ!
